Landes de Bussac 1958-1960
Jun 1 2011, 9:22 AM EDT
Hello everybody. I just found this site the other day and want to introduce myself.I was assigned to the 1st Platoon, 581st Engineer Co (Fld Mnt) attached to the 83rd Engineer Battalion (Const) from early in 1958 to 1960 at Camp Bussac, France. I recently tried to find it using Google Earth and NOTHING LOOKS THE SAME!!! I remember a camp way out in the middle of nowhere in the midst of a pine forrest [not very tall trees] We lived in 3 story WWI barracks and my outfit had a single squad bay on the 3rd floor of one close to the fence - from which we could see across an open field to a small cluster of houses "for the convenience of lonely GIs - all off limits of course). Our shop was located on the other side of the highway where the engineer battalion kept its equipment. I worked in the Personnel Office of the battalion headquarters as I was the unit clerk. As indicated elsewhere, the only main thing I remember was the Polish security guards who had an awesome mess where we used to get fantastic kielbasa. Anyhow, glad to find you. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Hello everybody. I just found this site the other day and want to introduce myself.I was stationed at Camp Bussac with the Bussac Chemical Depot from 1955 through 1959. I was attached to the 7814th Army Unit at Camp Bussac. I have returned to France several times including Bordeaux and the Bussac areas. The Camp is now a French Prison on the main side. The other side of the camp where the Chemical Depot was is just an open field. It appears that most of the buildings were removed. I would like to hear from anyone who was stationed there. There was an old German amo dump out behind the rear left cornner of the camp and that was my hideout at times. Hi, my name is Linda Gouge and was born in Bussac in Sept. 1958. My Father, William Gouge was stationed there and was with one of the transportation co. He retired in 1967 and believe it was the 172nd Transportion BN. He passed in 2000. If anyone has any pics from Bussac in the late 1950's and could e-mail them to me it would be wonderful to see them. We came back state side when I was 8 months old so would love to see some pics. My email is Lmg7433@aol.com Thank you!

I was stationed at Bussac from 2/1955 to 6/56. I was the Co clerk for the 55th Chemical Co (Processing) and we were first in tarpaper shacks accross the road from post headquarters and later in a prefab barracks which had the 7814th army unit in the other half. I think our orderly room did all the administrative work for the army unit. I remember clearly that the chemical troops had adopted a female dog named LULU. Were you possibly the Sgt Jones who ran the officers club? We had a 1st sgt named Denzil Jones who I believe was fataly injured in an automobile accident shortly after I rotated. Were you involved with te Chemical Corps prior to this assignment?I belive that a Capt Gans was our CO when I left. We had a Capt Welde prior to him. We had a Japanese american soldier named James Nakao who took care of the barracks, Do you remember him? I had a two tone green kaiser "dragon" which was parked accross from the barracks. I sold it to someone I don't remember when I left. Do you find this valuable? |

I just found an aerial photograph of Camp Bussac, France from 1954. I lived there with my parents. My father was Captain Wellde. I remember some things about it as I was 5 years old. I went to first grade in the temporary buildings and we lived in a chateau in the village. There was an old lady next to us who kept chickens and my brother and I were sometimes invited into the chicken coop to visit the chickens. Anyone remember this area? I wish I had asked my father about more about our time in France in 1954-57. My mother was very unhappy there because the weather was so bad for her sinuses. I would love to hear more from anyone who has memories from this early time. Do you find this valuable? |

A cette époque j'étais un jeune français de 10-12 ans et je jouais souvent avec mes copains américains qui habitaient Saint Andre de cubzac et dont le père était officier à Bussac. J'en ai gardé un très bon souvenir. Vive la France et L'Amérique.

I was in the 79th Engr Bn stationed in Pirmasens Germany from Feb 1956 - Aug 1958. We were sent TDY to Bussac in the spring of 1957 for six weeks. While there we did some road paving in the camp and some other things. We were then sent to Chinon for six weeks and then back to Germany.Bill Terrell Canton, NC 1/14/2012 Do you find this valuable? |

I was at camp Del La Braconne 1957 /58. I played on the touch football team and we went TDY to Camp Bussac for a game and we lost. I did get to see a High School mate David Ashcraft while I was there.I have the orders for that TDY and will post on my Photo Albums. For a side note: I was transferred to Fontenet and the regular (tackle)football team beat Bussac at Fontenet in 1957. 8 men from Braconne were on Fontenets team.I have pictures of that time. Hi, my name is Cathy Thomas---My dad was stationed at Camp Bussac in the mid 1950's. He and mom had 4 children when they arrived and within the next 2 years, both younger brothers were born there. I can remember sitting on a concrete/stone ledge in front of the house watching the water flow by, but as I was only 5-6, memories are vague! Dad caught tuberulosis and was sent state side where he spent the net 14 months in hospital in Pennsylvania. Have been back to France a couple of times as an adult, but never to Bussac.....always thought it might be cool to re-visit my past!
